Mobile apps seem to be all the rage right now. And many of them (think Angry Birds) appear to be tremendously successful. But can small businesses actually make money or get enough return on investment (ROI) to make investing in a mobile or Facebook app profitable? To find out, I recently spoke with three small businesses — Miss Cayce’s Christmas Store, Magic Beans (a popular Boston toy and baby gear store), and Melrose Jewelers. And they told me how the right mobile and/or Facebook app can absolutely help you attract new customers, increase sales, and increase how much time and money visitors spend on your website.

To learn more, including how much you can expect to pay for developing a mobile app or a Facebook app, read my article “How Apps Can Help Market Your Business, Increase Sales” on SmallBusinessComputing.com.

As of January 2011, 65.8 million Americans had a smartphone — an 8 percent increase over the previous three months, according to comScore. More significantly, those smartphone users are shopping via their mobile devices – some 48 percent of them, according to a recent comScore mobile commerce survey. And that’s not including the estimated 3 million plus iPad and other tablet users, who are also browsing and shopping online.

Indeed, many analysts are predicting that mobile commerce will soon overtake traditional ecommerce, as the number of smartphone and tablet (e.g., iPad) users continue to rise. The question is, Is your small business prepared for the mobile onslaught?

To find out if your small business is mobile commerce ready — and if not, how it can get ready — read my articles “Is Small Business Ready for Mobile Commerce?” and “Why You Need a Mobile Web Site.”
